"We're making obviously it's absolutely unlawful what's going on and we proclaimed it, so - - changes the dynamic," U.S. President Joe Biden told correspondents.

Gershkovich's family said later they had spoken with Biden.

"The State Department's official designation of Evan as wrongfully detained is encouraging. The family released a statement saying, "We appreciate President Biden's call to us today, assuring us that the U.S. government is doing everything in its power to bring him home as quickly as possible."

Dmitry Peskov, a spokesperson for the Kremlin, reiterated Russia's position that Gershkovich broke the law when asked about the State Department's move.

Before concluding, he stated that Gershkovich had "been caught red-handed and violated the laws of the Russian Federation." This is the very thing that he's associated with, obviously, the court will pursue a choice".

Over ninety percent of criminal cases in Russia result in convictions, and rights monitors have long criticized the nation for its lack of judicial independence.

The case against Gershkovich, which is proceeding in secret due to Russia's claim that the case materials are confidential, has received no evidence from Russia.

One week from now, a court will hear an allure from Gershkovich's lawful group against a request that he be held in pre-preliminary detainment at Moscow's Lefortovo jail until May 29.

Another prisoner, Paul Whelan, was permitted to address his folks on Monday without precedent for 12 days and knew about Gershkovich's case, his sibling David said.

In December, the United States obtained the release of basketball star Brittney Griner in exchange for arms dealer Viktor Bout. Whelan, a former Marine who has been held in Russia since 2018, was not included.
