The group of people waiting at a bus stop across the street from the Bishop Enrique San Pedro Ozanam Center, a non-profit homeless shelter in the border town that helps migrants, was struck by the Land Rover. According to Victor Maldonado, director of the Ozanam Center in Brownsville, surveillance footage showed the vehicle traveling at a high speed before hitting a curb 30 feet from where the migrants were seated. The driver appears to have lost control of the vehicle after that. The sanctuary's chief detailed that around 20 to 25 travelers were available on the check at the hour of the accident, having shown up at the safe house only a couple of days preceding the episode.
Following the crash, witnesses present at the scene made a prompt move and confined the driver until cops showed up, as affirmed by the police. Following the accident, exclusive footage obtained by CNN shows a group of people attempting to restrain the man.
Cesar Romero, a 34-year-old Venezuelan national, was one of the witnesses. He narrated the tragic event with tears streaming down his face. Romero said that some of his friends had arrived the night before and were killed when the car hit them.
Romero claims that the driver emerged from the wrecked vehicle with signs of impairment. He went on to say that the witness stopped the driver from fleeing and that the driver yelled vulgar words.
An official involved in the investigation, Sandoval, informed CNN that the video footage came to their attention on Monday morning. Sandoval said that the video was being looked at as part of another accident-related incident investigation. He added that the goal is to see if there is enough evidence to bring charges.
Sandoval featured that the examination is thinking about three likely points. First, the blood sample taken at the scene and sent to the Texas DPS crime lab will be analyzed to determine whether the driver was under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Second, looking into the possibility of a car issue. Thirdly, assuming that the incident was premeditated. The investigation is looking into each of the three possibilities.
According to Sandoval, the driver, who exhibited uncooperative behavior following the collision, provided authorities with various names. A toxicology test will also be carried out and a blood sample from the driver will be taken.
Specialists at the site of the deadly accident on Sunday inspected the seriously harmed Reach Meanderer, which showed a broke windshield, alongside critical harm to the driver-side entryway and hood.
