Trending on April 11, 2023: On Tuesday, an out-of-control fire consumed parts of an eastern beachfront city in South Korea, destroying many homes and forcing hundreds to flee.
According to officials, more than 2,300 firefighters and 300 vehicles extinguished the fire, which originated on a mountain in the center of Gangneung.
Over 400 people were evacuated to offices that included an ice-skating rink and a center school exercise center, in addition to the destruction of approximately 70 homes and other structures.
There were no immediate reports of injuries or deaths.
Firefighters were erecting barriers to prevent the fire from spreading to Gangneung's more densely populated areas after 914 acres were burned.
The Gangwon common government and the Korea Woods Administration are working together to put the fire under control.
According to photographs, firefighters sprayed water at burning homes and buildings as a pine forest near a resort hotel was engulfed in large, orange flames.
Instructions from the President The President of South Korea, Yoon Suk Yeol, instructed officials to deploy "all available equipment and personnel" in order to rapidly extinguish the wildfire and evacuate residents to prevent deaths.
