The United States has urged China to show restraint as Beijing conducts military drills around Taiwan amid rising tensions in the Asia-Pacific region.
A spokesperson for the State Department stated that the United States was prepared to fulfill its regional security commitments and that China's communication channels remained open.
A State Department spokesperson was quoted by AFP as saying about the People's Republic of China, "Our channels of communication with the PRC remain open and we have consistently urged restraint and no change to the status quo."
Although the United States hasn't said whether it would defend Taiwan militarily, it has provided the self-governing democracy with weapons for decades to help it defend itself.
Japan, which was impacted by China's previous military drills around Taiwan in August, is one of the US's allies in the region that is bound by treaty.
China's declaration of the tactical drills was seen as a "harsh advance notice" to Taiwan after its Leader, Tsai Ing-wen, met with US House Speaker Kevin McCarthy in California.
The Taiwanese President's visit has been described by US officials as a typical transit stop on her way to and from Latin America.
China was urged by the US not to overreact. Since then, McCarthy has shown his disbelief by claiming that China cannot control where he can go or who he can talk to.
"I'm the Speaker of the House. McCarthy wrote on Twitter, "China is not going to tell me where I can go or who I can talk to."
