ISLAMABAD: Today, Sunday, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will preside over a meeting of the federal cabinet to discuss a number of issues related to the country's most recent political and constitutional crises.
In the gathering's plan, as per the sources, the issue of assets for races in Punjab will go under thought, while the central government will choose to one or the other give or not give assets to the Political decision Commission of Pakistan (ECP). Sources told Geo News that officials have been asked to miss the cabinet meeting.
The meeting will also discuss President Dr. Arif Alvi's decision to return the Supreme Court (Practice and Procedure) Bill 2023, Justice Athar Minallah's dissenting note, the Supreme Court's verdict on polls, and deliberation on the country's political and economic issues, according to sources.
The meeting, which is being held online via video link and includes the premier and most ministers, will come up with a plan to address issues related to the bill with the government's legal team present.
The sources claim that the decisions made at the National Security Council (NSC) meeting on Friday will also be approved at the federal cabinet meeting.
Inter-Provincial Coordination Minister Riaz Hussain Pirzada, Overseas Pakistanis Minister Sajid Toori, Housing Minister Maulana Abdul Wasay, State Minister Hashim Notezai, and the prime minister's advisor Ameer Muqam are among the ministers who have attended the cabinet meeting from the PM House.
Ayaz Sadiq, Minister of Economic Affairs, and Khawaja Saad Rafiq, Minister of Railways, are among those attending online.
To meet the scrutiny regarding its validity, President Alvi returned the bill limiting the powers of the chief justice a day earlier with a request for reconsideration.
The bill aims to restrict the chief justice's powers, such as the suo motu and bench formation. The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has vehemently opposed the legislation's passage, describing it as an "attack on the judiciary."
According to Article 75 of the Constitution, the president returned the Supreme Court (Practice and Procedure) Bill, 2023, to the parliament for reconsideration, stating that the bill's prima-facie extends beyond the competence of the parliament and can be challenged as colorable legislation.
President Alvi said that SC Rules 1980 had been "made and in force properly approved and embraced by the actual Constitution" under empowering arrangements, for example, Article 191 of the Constitution which enables the top court to make rules controlling the training and methodology of the court.
The letter stated, "These tried-and-true rules are being followed ever since the year 1980 — any tinkering with the same may tantamount to interference with the Court's internal workings, its autonomy, and independence."
In the midst of a worsening political and constitutional crisis in the nation due to the upcoming elections in Punjab and KP, the bill was approved by both houses of parliament last month and sent to the president for approval.
After Alvi's refusal to consent to the regulation, the public authority is probably going to get past this bill from a joint meeting of the parliament.
PM Shehbaz later criticized the president for his decision to return the bill without a signature, describing it as "most unfortunate."
He added, "Through his conduct, he has belittled the august Office by acting as a worker of the PTI, one who is beholden to Imran Niazi more than the Constitution and demands of his Office." "Through his conduct, he has belittled the august Office."
Complete anti-terror campaign The National Security Council (NSC) decided on Friday to begin a comprehensive and comprehensive campaign against militant groups in order to eliminate the threat posed by terrorism in the country.
According to the statement, "The meeting agreed to launch an all-out comprehensive operation... with renewed vigor and determination... with the [help] of the entire nation and the government, which will rid the country of the menace of terrorism."
This all-encompassing and comprehensive operation will also include efforts at the political, diplomatic, security, economic, and social levels to eradicate terrorism in all its forms from Pakistan.
According to the statement, a high-level committee has also been established in this regard. Within two weeks, it will provide recommendations regarding the implementation and restrictions.
The statement said that the meeting focused on complete national security, with people's relief at the center. The government had informed the forum that it was taking steps in this direction.
